What is it about?

This chapter completes the journey. It summarizes the theme “Small Firms as Innovators” together with the insights that emerge out of empirical and theoretical evidence. This will be done by presenting the differences between the highly successful small firms and the majority of small firms. The behavior, characteristics, activities and processes of highly successful small firms are considered as potential elements of a success recipe for sustainable competitiveness and growth. Therefore, the High Performers are compared against the typical small firms. In addition, a set of the implications are provided for how to fill the gap between them. This comparison will be carried out by using the innovation engine as a framework.

Why is it important?

Despite the vital importance of small firms to the economies, our knowledge of the processes and dynamics of how small firms innovate, compete and grow is still very fragmented and even scant. Yet, the fact remains that it is extremely difficult to create a winning recipe for success in small firms. However, this chapter provides opportunities for benchmarking against the high innovation performers.

Perspectives

The model used in this chapter provides a framework for assessing the current state of a firm. By assessing the extent and quality of innovation activities it may be able to identify the areas for improvements. On the other hand, one may recognize the unrealized potential in a firm.
