What is it about?

This chapter focuses on the question of how the different kinds of innovation performers are growing. It aims to provide the reader with a multidimensional view of growth process including the periods of continuous and temporary changes. The chapter starts by discussing the relationship between innovation and growth, and the circumstances when innovation is considered as a source of growth. This will be followed by answering the question of how growth should be measured in small firms. Finally, the growth patterns of four innovation performer profiles are identified by using a combination of measures comprised of market-related, efficiency-related and employment-related indicators.

Why is it important?

The methods to stimulate this expansion in small firms have been of high interest to policy makers and scholars due to their significant contribution to employment and job creation. Despite the increasing number of studies on growth in small businesses, the current literature provides a fragmented body of knowledge for explaining growth in this context. This chapter contributes to the above gap.

Perspectives

While innovation reflects the outcome of abilities to search, recognize and seize the innovative opportunities, growth reflects the outcome of abilities to commercially exploit these innovations. The latter outcome, business growth, is in the center point of this chapter.
