What is it about?

This chapter explores the composition of innovation capacity in small firms. It identifies first what is the level of internal resources allocated to innovation activities. However, the resources are not enough alone. Also capabilities are required to integrate, build, and reconfigure these resources. For that reason, the status of current capabilities and future goals for capability creation are illustrated by the innovation performer profiles. Nevertheless, as has been commonly argued, innovation is not anymore the domain of an individual firm. Especially small firms should collaborate for enhancing their capacity to innovate. For that reason, the benefits gained for innovation through external collaboration are explored.

Why is it important?

The capacity concept used in this chapter describes the abilities of small firms to innovate as well as their abilities to exploit commercially these innovations. The question of how the innovation capacity requirements change along with the journey from the low innovation performer towards the high performer is illustrated.

Perspectives

It is evident that in small firms innovations are only seldom the results of planned activities characterized by scientific or technological knowledge. Instead, innovation can be a hidden activity.
