What is it about?

A single trapped ion within a cavity is coupled to a the quantized field via a two photon interaction. The ion subjected to a harmonic (center-of-mass) motion absorbs (or emits) two photons of the cavity field at once.

Why is it important?

An effective Hamiltonian for the system is derived. This allows, for instance, to find the effects of the center-of-mass motion over the field dynamics.
