Why is it important?

This is the first study in the West Indies to collect data in real time and document the above information. There is a detailed outline of the body areas that were affected and the implications of the injuries. It noted that the number of body parts involved and alcohol consumption as well as the mechanism of injury were significant independent predictors of need for hospitalization and need for surgery.

Perspectives

This unique study allows for the planning of a surgical unit to deal with musculoskeletal injuries. The predominance of lower limb injuries and the resulting need for both admission and surgery suggests that more needs to be done re: lower limb protective gear and making them more available to riders.
