What is it about?

The rate of bleeding among patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions is examined by comparing patients who received bivalirudin compared to those utilizing a closure device.

Why is it important?

Bleeding following PCI is associated with increased poor outcomes for patients and costs for hospitals. Those that experience bleeding post-procedure have more transfusions, more tests and longer lengths of stay. A peri-procedural treatment drug that prevents or minimizes post-procedure bleeding has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and decrease costs.

Perspectives

Conducting this study challenged the status quo on the issue of upfront costs versus down stream savings - a significant issue for hospitals and providers during a time of reimbursement changes and quality improvement initiatives.
