What is it about?

In this study, we used 25 Merkel cell carcinoma tumour samples to study the expression of Tenascin-C. Tenascin-C is a protein that is frequently expressed in many types of tissues, both in cancer and non-cancer. In cancers, it is sometimes a marker for aggressive behaviour as it is found in invasion and cell proliferation. We found that 17 that is 68% of the 25 tumours expressed Tenascin-C and expression correlated with larger tumours, > 2 cm in diameter and with those tumours that were aggressive and had metastases.

Perspectives

Although we did not find a good prognostic marker form Tenascin-C, this was a fun study. Nowadays it would be interesting to study if the Tenascin-C expression correlated with Merkel cell polyoma virus.
