What is it about?

We looked at deaths due to Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CevD) to better understand patterns of change and inequalities in their mortality rates in Scotland between 1974 and 2015. We found that CeVD mortality improved steadily over time whilst IHD mortality improved from the late 1980s. Inequalities were evident by sex, age and deprivation and have been greater for IHD with men, older people and those living in deprived areas having higher mortality risk. The inequalities in IHD mortality by area deprivation have persisted over time, increasing between the late 1980s and 2000 before declining, while inequalities by area deprivation for CeVD appeared from the late 1980s onwards.
