What is it about?

We showed for the first time that the macrophage activation marker soluble CD163 is elevated in the blood in patients with chronic liver disease and associated with liver disease severity (Child-Pugh and MELD scores). More importantly, a high sCD163 level predict the prognosis for patients with liver cirrhosis.

Why is it important?

This emphasize the key role liver macrophages play in liver inflammation, fibrosis and that specific macrophage markers has prognostic impact in patients with liver cirrhosis.

Perspectives

This warrants investigation of macrophage markers for liver disease severity, as prognostic markers and more importantly also for treatment effects.
