What is it about?

Bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) is a common condition but people with this condition are often undiagnosed or receive variable treatment. We have surveyed UK medical experts with extensive experience of BAD, who recommend the use of SeHCAT testing to diagnose people who have functional diarrhoea, IBS-D, or post-cholecystectomy diarrhoea, and in several other conditions.

Treatment with bile acid sequestrants is predicted to be successful in most patients with a positive SeHCAT test. Ways to improve treatment and the overall experience are suggested.

This review of expert opinion should improve the diagnostic rates and care of people with BAD, and will particularly help the large proportion of patients with IBS-D or functional diarrhoea who actually have this condition.
