What is it about?

Because of pressures on gastroenterology clinics most patients with stable coeliac disease are not followed up in outpatients now. We compare two neighbouring hospital Trusts strategies: nurse led telephone clinic outcomes or referral into primary care with proforma for patient management.

Why is it important?

Nearly three quarters of those referred back to GP follow-up received no annual follow-up for their coeliac disease. Although nurse led telephone clinic resulted in adherence to more guidelines, overall care was not optimal there either.

Perspectives

Loss of stable coeliac patients from gastroenterology clinics because of lack of capacity is likely to mean that many patients are not seen and their management is not reviewed. Whether this results in increased complications from suboptimally managed coeliac disease remains to be seen but is of concern.
