A new magnifying device to help patients with macular degeneration read better

What is it about?

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of irreversible blindness in the western world. The visual rehabilitation of patients with central scotomas resulting from either dry or treated neovascular AMD remains a challenge. Traditionally these patients are referred for low vision rehabilitation for the provision of hand held or loop magnifiers and education on adequate light illumination for reading tasks. Implantation of the Scharioth macula lens as piggy back / add on intraocular lens in previously pseudophakic eyes with age-related macular degeneration provides good improvement in the unaided near vision postoperatively.
