What is it about?

This report in the scoping review format summarises the information available for use when counselling older patients considering dialysis. This topic is relevant because along with the increasing numbers of older people with renal failure we are seeing research that shows that some older people do not do well on dialysis. Our review highlights prognostic scores for calculating risk of kidney failure and risk of death; considers the factors imputing on quality of life, and emphasises that older people want information beyond survival, in an appropriate format, so that they can be involved in their care and have better outcomes. The reports of lived experience on treatment is important information to share with new patients too.
