What is it about?

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides support to the heart and lungs when all other treatments have failed. Whilst ECMO offers an increased chance of survival to critically ill patients, it is associated with a high risk of infection. We aim to perform a study which determines the prevalence of hospital-acquired infection in neonatal, paediatric and adult patients receiving ECMO across Australia and New Zealand, because we currently do not know this. By doing so, we hope to develop interventions to reduce the burden of infection on patients receiving ECMO.
