Why is it important?

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are being increasingly used in modern healthcare to assess the quality of services provided. They have become an important measure of patient health status. Assessing and achieving outcomes important to patients is associated with higher rates of patient satisfaction and helps patients feel health professionals are engaged with their concerns. There is a national PROMS project which captures these scores using paper and pen. Our study is the first large scale study demonstrating electronic capture of these scores before and after surgery using iPads or SmartPhones and is on a very large scale in a busy hospital setting.

Perspectives

The paper was reviewed by Professor Nick Black, who stated in his review “This is a very welcome demonstration of the feasibility of implementing PROMs data capture using electronic technology. Although there has been much talk of such a development (and successful examples in Sweden), this is the first large scale demonstration in England."
