What is it about?

Risk factors for colon and rectum cancer in different parts of the colorectum may vary. Prior research studies of risk factors have usually lumped all locations into one, which may have limited the ability to understand which risk factors drive which types of colorectal cancer. We conducted a study to determine whether risk factor associations do indeed vary by anatomic site of cancer, and found that for many important risk factors, this is the case. This research may help to support more efficient discovery of risk factors for colorectal cancer and the mechanisms by which cancers develop.
