What is it about?
Macula-sparing rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is usually considered to have no influence on macular morphology or function. However, we found that ERG responses elicited from the macula are deteriorated significantly in eyes with macula-sparing RRDs when compared to the fellow eyes. The ERG responses were obtained using focal macular ERG with a round-shaped stimulus projected onto the macula.

Why is it important?
When visual function or surgical outcomes are evaluated in eyes with macula-on RRDs, it should be noted that the macular function at baseline (pre-surgically) is deteriorated even though the visual acuity is fairly good in most cases.
