What is it about?

A well validated questionnaire has been developed in the US to assess symptom severity and progress in a common eye condition called convergence insufficiency. It was never designed as a screening test, but we assessed whether is could be. We found that when used in non-symptomatic young adults it often diagnosed a problem which was not confirmed on clinical testing , while missing genuine ocular weaknesses. We therefore confirmed it should not be used as a screening test.

Why is it important?

The CISS is very useful to quantify and monitor patient symptoms, and is publicly available and simple to administer, but should not be used for screening purposes to diagnose or exclude ocular convergence problems.
