What is it about?
In view of limited national and regional clinical guidelines for melatonin prescription in the management of co-morbid sleep problems among CYP with NDEBID, we aimed to review the prescribing practices for melatonin among Community paediatricians working in two adjacent local authorities within a Community healthcare NHS foundation Trust.

Why is it important?
We aimed to identify differences in clinical practices between Halton, a relatively deprived LA compared to Warrington with average Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) score of 23 and 147 respectively out of 317 LAs.
Perspectives
The proportion of the childhood population offered prescriptions was more than double in Halton, compared to Warrington (1.4 and 0.6 per 1000 child’s population respectively). The majority of prescriptions for CYP in Warrington were licensed Slenyto formulations (94%) compared to only 17.5% in Halton. The local population demographics may significantly influence the clinical practice among professionals working even within the same organisations. There is urgent need for national and regional guidance for management of sleep problems among CYP with NDEBID, including safe and effective melatonin prescriptions.
