• There is a shortage of mental health providers and opportunities for psychiatric evaluation in rural communities within the U.S. • Suicide rates are higher in rural areas, and the rates of suicide per year are increasing faster than other areas. • Telemedicine consultation services to rural emergency department and critical access hospital providers may improve patient outcomes with psychiatric emergencies. • When telemedicine consultation was incorporated into patient care, there was a higher admission proportion and a lower proportion of involuntary hold placement. • Rural hospitals may consider the role of telemedicine consultation for meeting needs of patient management, facilitation of care, and timeliness of care.
