What is it about?

Drug-induced hepatitis is a leading reason that drugs are removed from the commercial market. Critical mechanisms responsible for the development of hepatitis are unclear; however we and others have discovered that pieces of a protein that metabolizes these drugs can trigger the immune system and cause hepatitis. Our discovery shows that the immune system is critically involved in this response. We also found that the same pieces of protein are recognized by persons suffering from fibrosis after viral hepatitis which could suggest common pathways for sequelae following liver injury from drugs or viruses

Why is it important?

Using this protein we can develop biomarkers to track disease and possibly specific neutralizing antibodies to decrease disease.

Perspectives

Our predecessors paved the way for our findings and we are happy to contribute to the field. Our goal is to reduce this type of hepatitis to zero and to understand why some patients treated for viral hepatitis still develop liver injury
