What is it about?

Bacteria isolated from unique locations in Colombia showed antimicrobial activity and, therefore, we analyzed their potential for synthesis of novel antimicrobial compounds by doing genomic sequencing. Here we describe the rationale for sequencing these strains and provide basic information regarding their metabolic potential.

Why is it important?

Bacteria belonging to the phylum Actinobacteria are a great source of natural products and an important potential source of novel compounds, such as antibiotics. The genome sequences of new isolates can give us insight into the potential of these strains as producers of natural products and could guide the study of particular genes found in their genomes.

Perspectives

These sequences show that despite being similar, the strains analyzed all contained different biosynthetic potential. Coupled to information of each strain's bioactivity in the lab, the genomic data can guide the identification and analysis of genes for the production of particular compounds in the lab.
