What is it about?

Type 2 diabetes is well characterized by an insulin resistance of peripheral tissues including skeletal muscle. ER stress contributes to the development of insulin resistance however the underlying mechanisms are not full understood. We identified that PIP3 phosphatase SKIP links ER stress and insulin signaling in this tissue.

Why is it important?

Since skeletal muscle plays 75 % of systemic glucose disposal, improvement of insulin signaling in this tissue may be a novel method for the recovery from Type 2 diabetes. SKIP may be a novel therapeutic target for the recovery from Type 2 diabetes.

Perspectives

Expression of phosphoinositide phosphatase SKIP in under control of ER stress especially through activation of transcriptional factor XBP1. Increase in SKIP expression may result not only in the Type 2 diabetes but also in other PI 3-kinase signaling-related diseases including cancer.
