What is it about?
Phytochromes—well known in plant biology for their role in perceiving the red / far-red ratio and regulating plant growth in the presence of competing plants—function in N. crassa and likely other fungi to modulate sexual development. When wild type fungi see red, they don't engage in sexual development until later. It's like a stoplight!
