Influenza Virus Induces Apoptosis via BAD-Mediated Mitochondrial Dysregulation

What is it about?

We looked for cellular genes and proteins that could be knocked down and that would protect cells from influenza virus-induced cell death.

Why is it important?

A number of compounds have been tested and are being used as anti-virals to treat people infected with viruses. Unfortunately, viruses mutate quickly and many such anti-virals eventually become ineffective. To solve this problem, we looked for cellular proteins that could be affected to protect cells from influenza virus infection without causing harm to the cell itself. We identified about a dozen such cell proteins that show promise as alternate therapeutics.
