What is it about?

Rubella virus (RuV) causes a systemic infection and the transplacental fetal infection causes congenital rubella syndrome. RuV binds to cells via a direct interaction between the RuV surface glycoprotein spike E1 protein and sphingomyelin/cholesterol-enriched host cell membranes.
