Characterized two S. aureus strains isolated from the same military trainee. The first isolate was sensitive to chlorhexidine, while the the second displayed reduced susceptibility to chlorhexidine.

Why is it important?

Chlorhexidine use is becoming increasingly common in the community and hospital settings. Here we describe a novel plasmid that harbors the qacA gene which has been shown to confer resistance to chlorhexidine.
