What is it about?
The bacterial protein toxin colicin E1 utilizes the TolC transperiplasmic protein to enter target bacteria. TolC is normally engaged in drug efflux, so understanding how it functions in import of the E1 protein is important. Here, a 21-amino acid sequence is identified as essential for the colicin to bind to TolC and kill target bacteria.

Why is it important?
Understanding how the important drug effluent protein, TolC, functions could lead to ways to reduce or block that process, making drug treatment of harmful bacteria more efficient.
