What is it about?

Shigella is a bacteria that causes dysentery. A limitation in Shigella research is that we do not have good systems to study how Shigella interacts with the human intestine. We show that 'mini-intestines' grown in the lab can be used to study how Shigella infects colon tissue.

Why is it important?

This study provides researchers a new tool to study Shigella pathogenesis.

Perspectives

It was certainly a new experience for me learning how to use intestinal enteroids, but a very good one. I think this is a great system to study Shigella, and I hope others can use this technology to answer important research questions.
