What is it about?

Espeletia plants harbor diverse microbial communities that differ slightly depending on plant location and carry a broad range of genes. These microorganisms have genes important for survival in the harsh environmental conditions in which they grow, such as temperature changes, few nutrients and exposure to UV light, and could be interesting for biotechnological developments.

Why is it important?

The study of microorganisms associated to plants opens interesting new ecosystems for exploration of microorganisms and their functional potential.

Perspectives

This opens up the opportunity to study microorganisms in endemic plant species, it contributes to our global knowledge of their distribution in the planet and provides important material for exploration of microbial adaptations to harsh environmental conditions.
