Selenium bioreduction

What is it about?

Selenium is an essential trace element in living organisms. It is a component of 21st amino acid selenocystenine and there are about 20 known selenoproteins. Se is a potential toxin to biota and has unusually high bioaccumulation potential in aquatic habitats. But, the biogeochemical Se cycle has received much less attention as compared to sulfur. State of art research on Se microbiology was presented.

Why is it important?

Selenium is important in industry, environment, health and material science. The selenium resources needs to better managed to avoid toxicity and depletion. Microorganisms plays a vital role in the biogeochemical cycle of selenium.

Microorganisms capable of selenate and selenite reduction are presented. Molecular mechanisms of selenium microbial transformations and assembly of selenium nanospheres was explained in detail. It is resource material for microbiology of selenium.
