What is it about?

This study shows that biodiversity loss will slow down evolution of the surviving species

Why is it important?

The current species extinctions waves associated with human activity may have a long-lasting impact, by creating an evolutionary debt: Since the remaining species will evolve more slowly, they may fail to diversify and generate new species that would replace the lost species.

Perspectives

I see this publication as an exemple that we can reconstruct miniature ecosystems in the lab, using bacteria to track how species adapt to a changing world
