What is it about?

In this study, we tested the effects of a 4-week guided home foot muscle exercise program on muscle contraction and movement of the toes in a group of active young adults who have never been taught foot exercises. The group that performed the exercises were compared to a control group who did not receive any exercises.

Why is it important?

The toe exercises, which are commonly referred to as intrinsic foot muscle exercises or toe-yoga, are frequently prescribed by healthcare providers in the treatment of ankle and foot condition and are used in athletic circles. However, there is little known about the effects of these exercises. This study provides information useful to clinicians when selecting treatment techniques and provides further insight regarding the role of the intrinsic foot muscles.
