What is it about?

The mechanism leading to an acute hamstrings tear during high-speed running is still a controversial question in the scientific community, so much that it has recently been subject to a proper “head-to-head” debate (Orchard Vs. Chumanov, Br J Sports Med. 2012). The thesis that hamstrings are most prone to tear during the late phase of swing (Chumanov) faced the hypothesis that this type of injury is more likely to occur during the early phase of stance (Orchard). The present discussion is meant to represent an outside opinion to this debate.

Why is it important?

Both of these theses have been analysed with respect to their biomechanical consistency and in the light of more recent experimental evidences. This contribution finally clarifies the hamstrings mechanism of injury during high-speed running.

Perspectives

Knowledge of the hamstrings injury mechanism during high-speed running may help coaches to prevent hamstrings tears and therapists to program a targeted and succesfull rehab.
