What is it about?

This interview study explores what helped women with eating disorders to "turn the corner" and begin recovery. Specifically, we compared and contrasted the recovery experiences of female college athletes with a group of non-athlete college peers.

Why is it important?

This is the first in-depth study of athletes' turning points in recovery from an eating disorder. In addition, the study highlights factors in eating disorder recovery that are unique to athletes, when compared to their non-athlete peers. As a result, coaches, parents, and clinicians who work with female athletes with eating disorders can gain insights on what supports athletes' recovery.

Perspectives

We hope that this paper offers readers new insight into the eating disorder experiences of competitive athletes and therefore leads to expedited recovery for future athletes who experience eating disorder symptoms.
