What is it about?

This work presents the design and construction of an artificial blowing machine that can play single-reed woodwind instruments (e.g. different types of saxophones and clarinets). It consists of an artificial mouth including a pressure supply, an artificial lip and an artificial tongue.

Why is it important?

Using such an artificial blowing machine it is possible to recreate musical notes, while being able to measure several quantities that are unavailable with human players. Furthermore, automatic control of the blowing pressure and the tonguing actions ensures the reproducibility of the experiments.
