What is it about?

The Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires is well known for its outstanding acoustical quality. This quality depends on several concurrent architectural factors, among which are the materials used in its construction and its particular interior geometry.

Why is it important?

From acoustical measurements, opinion polls to musicians, audiences and critics about the way they perceived sound, and the results of simulations in a digital model, we have identified some of the architectural causes of the acoustical quality of the Teatro Colón. Its acoustical behaviour is produced by a combination of architectural features, like the shape of the horseshoe, the height and depth of the boxes in the upper levels and the design of the proscenium.

Perspectives

We think that the highlights in this work allow not only for improving our understanding of such a wonderful theatre, but they could also help in the design of new rooms for music.
