What is it about?

A thorough experimental investigation was performed to identify buildings in which vibration levels exceeding specified limits should be attributed to transits in a nearby metro line. The paper presents the experimental approach and the methods used for data analysis. The investigation lead to improvements to the metro line operation.

Why is it important?

The results showed that a correct evaluation of the problem must be based on simultaneous measurements of vibration inside the building and at selected points in the metro line (tracks and tunnel walls). Inspection of pass-by time histories and spectral distributions allowed to identify the causes of the high vibration levels; these could often be attributed to sources other then the metro lines, e.g. road / rail surface transportation, building technical systems, occupants behavior, or structural problems of the building. Improvement actions were also recommended to the metro operators, aimed at reducing the vibrational impact of the infrastructure.

Perspectives

I hope that the paper gives a convincing appreciation of the extraordinary team effort that was put in place to perform all the measurements in just four weeks and process a huge amount of data in the following month, in order to rapidly provide the expected answers to our client. Furthermore, it was an incredibly instructing experience to tackle an insidious and often overlooked problem, such as the assessment of vibrational impact of trasportation sytems.
