What is it about?

Cochlea inside the human inner-ear is a delicate and complex apparatus that converts mechanical vibrations (from sounds) into electrical signals that are eventually processed and perceived by the human brain. One of the very outstanding characteristics of the mammalian cochlea is signal distortions that are believed to root from nonlinearity and electro-mechanical active processes. There have been many computational models that aim to model cochlea and its astonishing characterstics. CARFAC is one of the most successful cochlear models that is used both in science and industry. This study deep dives into the mathematics of the CARFAC model and how it generates these distortions and some anomalies that can be explained and resolved.
