What is it about?
This paper studies a technique to obtain a fast convergence and tracking when howling occurs in hearing aids. It has been evaluated for different input signals such as male and female speech and music.

Why is it important?
Howling is one of the most annoying things when you wear a hearing aid or assistive listening device. Thus to be able to shorten the howling period every time it occurs is very useful.
Perspectives
This paper falls into the category of affine combination adaptive filters. As such, a fast converging adaptive filter is used when howling is detected and after it has recovered a slower converging but bias-free adaptation filter is used instead. Thus both fast convergence and low misalignment are achieved.
