What is it about?
This article shows a method for creating realistic stimuli of environmental noise based in combinations of previously imported audio files containing samples of sound events that are as isolated as possible from other sound events. Each stimulus can be generated by setting the spectral content, the temporal profile, and the classes of sources that compose the virtual environmental noise.

Why is it important?
This method is unique because it allows to control parameters of realistic noises for laboratory experimentation. Traditional experiments in laboratory were done with non realistic noises in which the control of the spectral and temporal parameters is achieved by applying filters or temporal envelopes to the noise. Our method use realistic noises and control the same parameters of traditional experiments by solving the problem of which individual noises and how to combine them. Our method intends to enhance the ecological validity of laboratory studies.
