What is it about?

This paper describes a system that is able to monitor the thermal lensing of a multi-kilowatt fiber laser systems.

Why is it important?

Knowing the thermal time constant of a fiber laser system that is thermal lensing can provide the user with the ability to take corrective action to mitigate the effect of the thermal lensing.

Perspectives

Thermal lensing occurs most predominately in the first 30 seconds of on time for the laser system. Knowing what this value is and how it changes can provide the user with insight to how it may influence the laser material processing taking place.
