What is it about?
A CCD camera acquires two images, one using co-polarized light (I_p) and one using cross-polarized light (I_x). These are combined to specify the anisotropy of scattering, g1 = <cos(theta)>, where theta is the deflection angle of scatter by a scattering event. g1 is sensitive to the sub-micron scale of tissue structure.

Why is it important?
Rapid non-invasive monitoring of nano-scale changes in tissue structure is potentially very useful. Example applications are, (1) finding margins of skin cancer to guide surgical excision, (2) monitoring skin remodeling in wound healing, (3) assessing the age of skin.
