What is it about?

Models are proposed, and equations are derived for the energy conservation of multiple streams in a wave rotor. Hypotheses on ideal processes are made to set the appropriate goals of the wave rotor design. New definitions of the efficiency are proposed to correct the efficiency values and to make the values for compression and expansion independent.

Why is it important?

An efficiency definition set a goal for the optimization of machines including wave rotors. If we need a useful goal, we need an appropriate definition. Common definitions of isentropic efficiency would compute wrong efficiency values for a wave rotor, so new definitions are needed.

Perspectives

A wave rotor contains multiple streams of working components in either compression or expansion process, so the thermodynamic efficiency is hard to define. New definitions are derived from multi-stream control volumes. As a consequence, they could correct the efficiency values and make the values for compression and expansion independent.
