What is it about?
This paper examines the costs and benefits of a trilateral FTA among China, Japan, and Korea to the individual member countries as well as the three countries put together, and then recommends that the best way to ultimately realize such a trilateral FTA would be to have a China-Korea FTA first, followed by a Japan-Korea FTA and culminating a trilateral FTA among the three countries - hence the title - A bilateral route to a trilateral FTA.

Why is it important?
Within Asia, China, Japan, and Korea (CJK) occupies a unique position. While China is the emerging economic power, Japan is already and established industrial nation, and in between sits the dynamic Korean economy. Asia's economic integration depends a lot on how these three countries integrate among themselves. A trilateral FTA among the three - an idea that has been there for quite a long time now - is the first step towards their closer economic integration. Hence the importance of the subject.
