What is it about?
Liver is an important organ responsible for detoxification process. Glutathione S-transferase is an important enzyme related to detoxification proces in the liver. In our work we showed that, the thyroid status affects detoxification enzymes. When thyroid hormones levels are low, what is called hypothyroidism, T3 treatment decreases the expression of the glutathione S-trasnferase.

Why is it important?
Our finding suggest that the detoxification process in the liver needs to be monitored in hypothyroid patients during T3 treatment.
Perspectives
The class α glutathione S-transferase represents the major group of GSTs in the liver, and these isoenzymes are able to substantially affect detoxification processes. When we started this study we realized that while much is known about the responsiveness of GSTs to exogenous compounds, such as phenobarbital and dexamethasone, endogenous regulation of this enzyme family was poorly studied. Thyroid hormones are important to the health of the individuals, therefore we studied GST regulation by thyroid hormones.
