What is it about?

A longitudinal study of using online testing as one form of assessment on a first year level engineering course in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. It explores student aceptance of the test method, which is delivered beside a written coursework and a more traditional exam style test.

Why is it important?

Assessment and feedback are perennial low scorers in national student surveys. Improving assessments and having online testing and feedback helps in several ways. 1) part time students in particular, can access the test at a time to suit their working schedule and receive generic feedback immediately, 2) by varying the test mode, students who have different skills and learning modes can improve their pass averages. 3) the student learning experience is improved by engaging students with the learning materials early in the course, for online, open book tests..

Perspectives

Pass rates and progression have improved and resits have dropped since this was inrotoduced.
