What is it about?

Dwarf geckos of the genus Lygodactylus occur in continental Africa and Madagascar. In this study we reconstruct the origin, evolution and pathways and processes of geografical diversification of these geckos.

Why is it important?

Biogeography of Madagascar remains one the most interesting issues in natural sciences. In this paper we demonstrate that faunal exchanges between Madagscar and Africa included complex pathways. Even if dispersal from continents to islands is more common than the opposite, our data show that the dwarf geckos originated in Madagascar, colonized Africa and came back to the island with a secondary radiation.

Perspectives

I found very interesting to follow the evolution and diversification of these geckos from a phylogenetic, biogeographic and chromosomal perspective.
