What is it about?
Porcine islet cells are often transplanted in diabetic patients while researching ways to cure Type I diabetes. A reliable method of measuring the output of those porcine islet cells, porcine C-peptide (PCP), is needed even when the sample matrix is not porcine. For years a radioimmunoassay (RIA) was commonly used in the field to measure PCP. However, when that RIA was discontinued by the manufacturer the field was left wondering how a newer ELISA compared. We validated the ELISA and found it to be reliable and fit for the purpose of measuring PCP in primate samples. In addition, we directly compared the results of the two test methods to calculate a formula for converting results between the two methods, within a certain range of C-peptide concentrations.

Why is it important?
We have provided a way to directly compare and convert results between the old, discontinued, testing method, and the newer, available test method. This allows for historical comparison of results with previous work or with long-term, ongoing studies.
