What is it about?

ATP is best known as the chemical energy currency of living cells, but when released outside cells, it also acts as a crucial signalling molecule. We show that external ATP protects plants from fungal toxins through PLCL1, a plant cell-surface protein that binds ATP.

Why is it important?

Although receptors for extracellular ATP are known, the proteins initiating ATP’s protective effects against fungal toxins were unknown. We identify PLCL1 as a key component of this pathway, pointing to a previously unrecognised mechanism of ATP signalling in plants. Our work provides a foundation for uncovering this mechanism.

Perspectives

I personally really enjoyed conducting the ATP-labelling experiments and using 2D-Western blotting with the Typhoon imager.
